Why you forget, and what to do about it
Your memory keeps what looks like it will be needed again, and it decides that using evidence you can deliberately supply. Most study habits supply none of it.
Why the brain throws things away
A memory that kept everything would be useless, so yours keeps what looks important and works that out from your behavior: what you keep needing, and what was hard to get back.
The second one is the lever, and it runs backward to how studying feels. Effortful retrieval is the signal. Something you struggled to recall and then got is marked worth keeping. Something you re-read while it was still fresh is marked as already available, so nothing gets strengthened.
The three things that work
1. Spacing: leave a gap on purpose
Reviewing at growing intervals beats reviewing repeatedly in one sitting, at the same total time, and not by a little. A workable ladder is a day, then three, a week, two weeks, a month.
The gap is the active ingredient: you have to have partly forgotten for the retrieval to cost anything, and the cost is the point. Reviewing before you've started to forget is nearly free and buys nearly nothing.
2. Retrieval: pull it out, don't push it in
Testing yourself is learning, not measuring. Trying to recall something, failing, then seeing the answer beats reading that answer twice — which is why the blank-page test in the previous guide does double duty. It tells you what you know, and running it strengthens what you know.
3. Interleaving: mix the topics up
Studying one topic to exhaustion and then the next feels organized and remembers worse. Blocked practice lets you coast: you already know which method applies, because it's the one from this chapter. Mixing topics makes you work out which approach a problem needs, which is the skill you were after.
All three make studying harder now and better afterward. If a study session feels smooth and productive, be suspicious.
The ones that only feel productive
- Re-reading. Each pass feels better because the text is more familiar, not because you know more.
- Highlighting. Feels like processing. It's a decision about which sentences matter, made before you know enough to judge.
- Copying notes out neatly. Transcription. Notes written from memory afterward are worth many times notes copied during.
- Watching a video at 2×. Fast input, no retrieval. Lots covered, little kept.
- Marathon weekend sessions. All the spacing collapses into one day. Twenty minutes daily beats a five-hour Sunday on a quarter of the time.
